Via Ferratas of The French Alps
£17.00

Via Ferratas of The French Alps

Via Ferratas of The French Alps by Richard Miller. A new for 2014 guidebook to sixty-six routes in areas as diverse as Geneva, Grenoble, Briancon and the Vanoise. The book contains a wide variety of routes from easy to really-quite-tough. The Via Ferrata Guide is in standard guidebook format, essentially pocket sized with a durable soft cover. It is illustrated with colour photographs and maps and has 352 pages. Published by Cicerone. A different sort of challenge for cavers venturing over the Channel!
Camp Rockstar
£37.20

Camp Rockstar

An old fashioned cradle-fitted helmet, simple yet very suited for our purposes; a useful item for clubs but also a reasonable starter helmet, or for divers where foam is not wanted. One size fits most, but the Rockstar remains a pretty low-profile piece of kit. It has four side vents and rudimentary headlamp clips (better suited to fixed lamps, or headtorches might need their own clips added) Polypropylene injected shell, current stock is RED. The Rockstar has a given weight of 390g.
Petzl Boreo
£52.20

Petzl Boreo

A well-ventilated, moderate-volume helmet, suitable for climbing and caving. The Boreo is a throughly modern pice of kit, using the hybrid construction of a hard ABS outer shell protecting a dual foam liner. This maximises top and side protection from impact, while giving a good level physical head cover too. Four effective headtorch clips. Weight 295g. Meets standard EN 12492, and UIAA standards.
Petzl Gym
£42.00

Petzl Gym

A compact and lightweight, basic climbing harness, very suitable for via ferrata use as it is not padded - but people on VF do not normally intend to hang in their harness for very long, either! One size fits most, with a belt adjustment sizes from 60cm - 101cm. Doubleback buckles on the waist and leg loops allow quick alteration. The high attachment point is reinforced with dyneema and makes it very easy to attach lanyards such as the Petzl Scorpio, correctly. Weight is 390g and colours are as shown, brown and grey. Leg loops are colour coded.
Petzl Vertigo Wire Lock
£17.40

Petzl Vertigo Wire Lock

Big alloy krab with a wide gate opening to allow large wires to be clipped easily. The locking mechanism is a major safety asset in big sliding falls, where karabiners can easily be knocked open by impacts against rock, stemples and suchlike. The lock is easily opened one handed, and engages automatically (but visually check it anyway!). You could also put these karabiners on your caving cowstails; although you'll want to keep them grit free to keep that mechanism smooth. Weight 97g. Major axis strength 25KN; minor axis strength 10KN; open gate strength 8KN Made in Italy.
CT Kayak
£15.60

CT Kayak

A large alloy snaplink, that is easily handles and roomy enough to facilitate a resting clip on a via ferrata course. This is not meant to be used on the shock absorbing elements of the lanyards, but is suitable for the central point on the Petzl Scorpio. With its wide gate opening of 32mm, plus capacious internal space it is easy to clip and unclip from wires and moderate sized stemples. Weight is 78g. Long axis strength 22KN; gate open 8KN; and cross loaded strength 9KN. Made in Italy.
Petzl Scorpio Vertigo Lanyard
£76.50

Petzl Scorpio Vertigo Lanyard

Specially designed shock-absorbing lanyards to deal with the high fall-factors that can be generated by long falls down fixed vertical wires (or ropes). Tied rope cowstails for caving will *not* cope with this! This small, neat and very easy-to-use set consists of a 'one use' tear apart shock absorber, one short lanyard (for resting, on rungs or similar) plus two longer tape lanyards to make the clips on the wire. These are elasticated to facilitate long reaches, while preventing them from getting in the way, or catching up, at other times. Short length is 32cm, and the extended length is 77cm. It is for use with users weighing between 40kg and 120kg. The set comes with two Vertigo slide-lock alloy karabiners. These are strong, easy to operate one-handed, and have a wide gate opening to facilitate clipping on big wires. As a central resting karabiner we would recommend a large opening unit like the CT Kayak, or the Petzl Vertigo Wire-Lock.
Petzl Scorpio Eashook Lanyard
£87.00

Petzl Scorpio Eashook Lanyard

Specially designed shock-absorbing lanyards to deal with the high fall-factors that can be generated by long falls down fixed vertical wires (or ropes). Tied rope cowstails for caving will *not* cope with this! This small, neat and very easy-to-use set consists of a 'tear webbing' shock absorber, one short lanyard (for resting, on rungs or similar) plus two longer tape lanyards to make the clips on the wire. These are elasticated to facilitate long reaches, while preventing them from getting in the way, or catching up, at other times. Short length is 36cm, and the extended length is 84.5cm. It is for use with users weighing between 40kg and 120kg. The set comes with two Eashook auto-locking karabiners. These are strong, easy to operate one-handed, and have a wide gate opening to facilitate clipping on big wires. The Eashook also features an anti-twist system which makes handling very easy. As a central resting karabiner we would recommend a large opening unit like the CT Kayak, or the...
Petzl Grigri
£69.00

Petzl Grigri

Belay device for single ropes, with assisted braking. Works nicely with the Petzl Volta 9.2mm but made to work with 8.5mm to 11mm ropes. It takes in rope very quickly and smoothly, and (with practice) can pay out quickly as well. The Grigri is designed to work from a belayer's harness, but has been (mis)used as a direct belay by experienced users who know that extra braking and careful monitoring is required. In this case it can integrate into a 3:1 hauling system( with the minimal addition of a rope clamp such as a Prusik loop or Tibloc plus karabiner and, maybe, a pulley). We provide the Grigri in orange to assist in gear identification and to match the Volta rope! Weight 175g.
Petzl Volta 9.2mm
£84.00

Petzl Volta 9.2mm

Lightweight multi-type dynamic rope with Petzl's Duratec dry teatment. A 30m length in nice cheerful orange which is a good length for an extra safeguard for via ferrata. It is flexible, durable, and works well with any haul or belay devices in standard use. . Clearly, all users should have the appropriate lanyards; but in the case of a difficult section that one person finds hard to pass, or in the case of injury, then a haul- or lowering-line is invaluable. Many sport routes have 'pig tails' built in, which act as running belays for those who take ropes to cheer up a leader and assist a second; and if one is on the bigger mountain routes the damaged or broken cables are not unknown... Weight 54g per metre.
