Caving Gear Image

Rigging and Aid Climbing

Primarily the kit to place bolts with, and the kit required to reach the places where you want to place bolts! There are no drills on here, but that’s because everyone has their own specific needs and preferences; this section does have the hammers and drivers for more caver-specific uses that won’t be found in good hardware outlets. For the bolts and hangers that you’ll be placing, the caver specific items (again, not the cheap options available in hardwares) are in their own section.

Petzl Volta 9.2mm
£84.00

Petzl Volta 9.2mm

Lightweight multi-type dynamic rope with Petzl's Duratec dry teatment. A 30m length in nice cheerful orange or stylish grey, in a length for good aid climbing. It is flexible, durable, and works well with any haul or belay devices in standard use. We work on the assumption that even with a drill, 30m of bolting is enough before arms get tired and communication with any belayer might become a problem. The Volta is a single rope, and can be used as such, but has the advantage that its size allows it to be used as a double rope - hence the two colours available. . Weight 54g per metre.
Petzl Grigri
£69.00

Petzl Grigri

Belay device for single ropes, with assisted braking. Works nicely with the Petzl Volta 9.2mm but made to work with 8.5mm to 11mm ropes. It takes in rope very quickly and smoothly, and (with practice) can pay out quickly as well. The Grigri is designed to work from a belayer's harness, but has been (mis)used as a direct belay by experienced users who know that extra braking and careful monitoring is required. Going further, it has been used as a belay device by solo bolt climbers, but these are straying into deep waters indeed. We provide the Grigri in orange to assist in gear identification and organisation underground. Teams with Freino, the extra braking spur is useful when lowering a heavily-laden caver. If not a Freino, then a separate braking krab might still be considered for this role; and NB that engaging the extra friction when a climber is leading, will cause - well - unwanted friction! It is for lowering only. Weight 175g.
Petzl Freino
£31.50

Petzl Freino

Compact alloy karabiner with twist-lock closure. Keylock nose for snag-reduced installation on a harness. Main feature of this is a braking spur along the back gate, which allows friction to be added and adjusted easily. As this is an alloy karabiner, a gritty rope will wear out the braking spur more quickly than using a separate steel karabiner. Apart from this drawback there are also advantages. Primarily they are that organisation on the central attachment is less cluttered; and that - especially with a non-autolock descender such as a Simple - it is more easy to put rope in the braking spur or else take it out, as the braking spur is presented on a loaded karabiner which is not 'floppy'. Braking provided is intermediate; less than a Raumer Handy but more than a plain steel oval. Expedition cavers of avarage weight and above, have been known to keep the descender on the Freino, but keep a Handy with them too, for scary muddy ropes, or rescues. Weight 85g. Major axis strength 25 kN;...
Petzl Evolv Adjust
£56.40

Petzl Evolv Adjust

A dual lanyard with a speedy-length-adjust mechanism, specifically for aid-climbing. It can adjust smoothly from 15cm to 150cm. This is a great advantage in aid climbing off bolts where height gain with each upwards movement is maximised, as there is little loss. Best used with medium karabiners such as the Petzl Sm'D. Note that the Evolv Adjust is a positioning device and not an energy absorber, and therefore should not be a link in the safety chain if greater than Factor 1 falls are anticipated. Weight 220g.
Petzl Sm’D Twistlock
£16.50

Petzl Sm’D Twistlock

Compact and secure attachment recommended for use with the Connect Adjust, as it is also very quick to open. The Sm’D is a small, alloy, D shaped karabiner, with the now-standard keylock system and a Twistlock closure. It is also of H section to maximise strength to weight ratio. Weight is 53g. Long axis strength is 23KN; minor axis 8KN; gate open 7KN. Gate aperture is 20mm.. Made in France, three year warranty. Conforms with CE EN 12275
Raumer Etrier Step
£4.20

Raumer Etrier Step

Raumer Etrier Step. Light, solid steps that can be assembled with 6mm cord (sold separately)to create etrier steps for aid climbing and bolting. Combines well with the Raumer Stick Up to create an effective lightweight scaling system. Should last a caving career - if you don't leave it in a wet plastic bag for months on end, that is - it's tough, not magical!
Five Step Etrier
£24.00

Five Step Etrier

A set of five of the Raumer etrier steps, provided with 6mm accessory cord to make a very compact, light, and strong aid to artificial ascents. Set at approximately 24cm spacing per rung. Often bought in pairs but presented singly here.
Raumer Stick Up
£39.00

Raumer Stick Up

Alloy bar used with etriers (sold separately)to facilitate aid climbing. It allows a significant amount of extra progress to be made with each bolt placed, but is small and light enough to transport easily through a cave. Works up to the vertical, not for steeply overhanging ground. Requires two oval karabiners to fit the clipping in points. Currently out of stock, but coming in with next Raumer order.
Petzl Large Sky Hook
£15.00

Petzl Large Sky Hook

A very useful part of any bolting kit, as it allows hands-free positioning while placing bolts, expecially for off-line rebelays and deviations. Steel, with nylon - dyneema sling, weight 50g. It takes body weight plus, but isn't for rigging off! It may be used in progression while aid climbing, of course, if one is brave or impatient...
Petzl M8 Bolt Driver
£25.20

Petzl M8 Bolt Driver

Light and compact tool for hand driving the 8mm self drill anchor. All steel, with a folding, long grip handle to facilitate turning the driver while placing the bolt. If bolt 'binds up' the handle may be struck gently, to free it up. Wrist loop to allow clipping in, and to reduce the chance of loss. Replaceable tip may be purchased separately if the thread strips. Weight 280g
