Karabiners and maillons: SRT

This category covers items that are primari,y for personal use in an SRT rig. They are in the order: harness closure: karabiners for cowstail and descender attachment; and specialised - generally steel - braking krabs. The items in the category 'Maillons and karabiners for rigging' might also have what you want, if you are after smaller maillons.

Petzl Sm'D Twistlock
£16.50

Petzl Sm'D Twistlock

Compact and secure attachment which is also very quick to open, and can be operated one-handed by a dexterous caver. The Sm’D is a small, alloy, D shaped karabiner, with the now-standard keylock system and a Twistlock closure. It is also of H section to maximise strength to weight ratio. Weight is 53g. Long axis strength is 23KN; minor axis 8KN; gate open 7KN. Gate aperture is 20mm.. Made in France, three year warranty. Conforms with CE EN 12275
Cordes Courant Axxis Oval Screwgate
£12.60

Cordes Courant Axxis Oval Screwgate

Oval screwgate with keylock. Medium sized and reassuringly solid karabiner with good gate opening. An ideal accessory for mid - rope rescue and as a general 'spare' krab, also as an attachment for descender or footloop. It has a red 'danger marker' to alert the user to the screwgate being undone. Cordes Courant are a French company with a good and growing reputation (their rope is getting better known also) and quality control is all you'd expect of a European manufacturer. Length 110mm, weight 78g, gate opening 21mm Long axis strength 24kn, gate loaded 10kn.
Petzl Attache
£13.50

Petzl Attache

Compact and functional pear shaped alloy screwgate designed for belaying with the Italian hitch. The shape facilitates the knot reversing in use when changing from taking in to paying out, and vice versa. The Attache is particulary suited to ropes of 8mm to 10mm. Keylock style closure for ease of clipping in and removing the rope, and the screwgate ensures increased safety while belaying or clipping in. As a Petzl screwgate it features the red 'danger warning' band to indicate whether or not the screwgate is done ups eight is 56g. Major axis strength 22KN; gate open strength 6KN; cross loaded strength 7KN. Made in France.
Petzl A'm D Screwgate
£16.80

Petzl A'm D Screwgate

Medium sized alloy D shaped screwgate karabiner, reassuringly solid and strong. Keylock gate. Suitable for descender attachment (large internal space makes a hard lock easy). Also a very useful accessory krab for attaching the footloop to the jammer, and for cowstails if a very strong screwlock is favoured over a snaplink. Major axis strength 27Kn; open gate strength 8Kn; gate opening 25mm; weight 70g.
Petzl Am'D Twistlock
£18.60

Petzl Am'D Twistlock

Medium sized alloy D shaped twistlock karabiner, reassuringly solid and strong. Keylock gate. A practical accessory krab for rescue purposes, and especially for cowstails if a very secure connection is favoured, which can still be used one-handed (with practice!) NB we do not recommend this particular closure for attaching descenders, simply because other karabiners in this range perform better in this role. Major axis strength 27Kn; open gate strength 8Kn; gate opening 25mm; weight 75g.
Petzl Am'D Triact
£18.60

Petzl Am'D Triact

Medium sized alloy D shaped Triact karabiner, reassuringly solid and strong. Keylock gate. A practical accessory krab for use in hauling systems as it secure and not prone to alteration if left unsupervised! This Triact model is also well suited for attaching descenders, being secure once correctly put in place, easy to remove if necessary, and large enough to facilitate lock-offs even on thick ropes. NB we do not recommend this particular closure for cowstails, simply because other karabiners in this range perform better in this role, as they can easily be opened one-handed (which this model cannot). Major axis strength 27Kn; open gate strength 8Kn; gate opening 25mm; weight 75g.
Steel Oval Snaplink
£7.20

Steel Oval Snaplink

A traditional, steel oval snaplink which is well suited for use as a braking karabiner. Less aggressive braking than the Raumer Handy, which may suit less experienced users or those on thicker or stiffer ropes. Also useful if you want a more versatile braking krab i.e. it can also hold together the Garma harness when in ascent, be used as part of a Garda hitch, and works better on steel cable traverses than more specialised gear. Long axis - 24kn. Gate open - 6kn.Gate aperture 20mm (note, this is *not* a keylock). Weight 144g.
Raumer Handy
£22.20

Raumer Handy

Specialised and highly effective steel wiregate device, intended for use as a braking karabiner. Very hard wearing braking tool suitable for use with simple, stop descenders etc. Most effective on thin ropes (8mm - 9mm) or those of unusually low friction; perhaps occasionally 'snatchy' on thicker or older ropes. Safety is increased through the high friction, which comes into its own when heavy loads are carried, and also on larger pitches where rebelay failure below the caver may be a risk (see the Caving Technical Manual) Most suitable for more experienced users; but also for anyone who is expecting to encounter 'fast' ropes!
Petzl Freino
£31.50

Petzl Freino

Compact alloy karabiner with twist-lock closure. Keylock nose for snag-reduced installation on a harness. Main feature of this is a braking spur along the back gate, which allows friction to be added and adjusted easily. As this is an alloy karabiner, a gritty rope will wear out the braking spur more quickly than using a separate steel karabiner. Apart from this drawback there are also advantages. Primarily they are that organisation on the central attachment is less cluttered; and that - especially with a non-autolock descender such as a Simple - it is more easy to put rope in the braking spur or else take it out, as the braking spur is presented on a loaded karabiner which is not 'floppy'. Braking provided is intermediate; less than a Raumer Handy but more than a plain steel oval. Expedition cavers of avarage weight and above, have been known to keep the descender on the Freino, but keep a Handy with them too, for scary muddy ropes, or rescues. Weight 85g. Major axis strength 25 kN;...
Petzl Freino Z Triact
£39.00

Petzl Freino Z Triact

Compact alloy karabiner with very secure triact-lock closure. Keylock nose for snag-reduced installation on a harness. Main feature of this is a braking spur along the back gate, which allows friction to be added and adjusted easily. This is the new version of the Freino that integrates well with the recent versions of the Petzl Simple and Stop. The gate opening is reversed, which is more reassuring for users who prefer their gate opening to face downwards; also the shape of the body reduces the risk of losing the descender off the harness in gnarly passage. It is VERY IMPORTANT to note that it does not work at all with the older versions. As this is an alloy karabiner, a gritty rope will wear out the braking spur more quickly than using a separate steel karabiner. Apart from this drawback there are also advantages. Primarily they are that organisation on the central attachment is less cluttered; and that - especially with a non-autolock descender such as a Simple - it is more easy to...
