Karabiners and maillons: SRT

This category covers items that are primari,y for personal use in an SRT rig. They are in the order: harness closure: karabiners for cowstail and descender attachment; and specialised - generally steel - braking krabs. The items in the category 'Maillons and karabiners for rigging' might also have what you want, if you are after smaller maillons.

Half Circle Maillon 10mm, STEEL
£6.00

Half Circle Maillon 10mm, STEEL

£18.00

Half Circle Maillon 10mm, STAINLESS

Classic, stainless, and very strong screw closure link for modern caving SRT harnesses. Can be used with all sit harnesses sold by Starless River; only the Petzl Omni or the Cordes Courant Moka may be used in its place with safety. Supplied by Peguet. Weight 159g.
Petzl Omni Screwgate
£21.90

Petzl Omni Screwgate

The Omni is an alloy, very secure karabiner that essentially replaces the central D shaped maillon in an SRT kit. Solid (10mm bar) design with keylock and a screwgate closure (complete with red 'warning ring' which shows if the screwgate is undone). Quicker to do up and undo than a traditional maillon, strong, light, and convenient, the Omni will maintain the integrity of the loop which is the basis for most caving harnesses. It is very convenient for those wishing to dekit quickly, whether due to very cold weather for changing, or incipient incontinence... Major axis strength 20kn, minor axis strength 15kn. The strength with open gate is still 7kn, and the gate open aperture is 22mm (so it is easy to fit on harnesses with fabric loops). Weight 86g
Cordes Courant Moka
£22.80

Cordes Courant Moka

Effectively, a karabiner to replace the central maillon in an SRT setup. The Moka is an alloy, tri-act karabiner, strong, light, and convenient to use. As with the Omni, the advantages of this over a traditional steel maillon are weight, convenience (easier and quicker to unclip from the harness intentionally) and the reassurance that if any openings unscrew / undo, the karabiner is still as strong as long as the gate remains closed... not so with a maillon. I've used one of these since the start of 2010 and find it as easy to use as my normal Omni screwgate; copes well with muddy environments and has been very valuable in sub-zero conditions, for quick changes. Cordes Courant are making a (limited) range of good hardwear these days, as well as their ropes. Length is 87mm, weight is 54g. Long axis strength is 25kn, gate opening is 10kn
Petzl Omni Triact
£22.80

Petzl Omni Triact

The Omni is an alloy, very secure karabiner that essentially replaces the central D shaped maillon in an SRT kit. Solid (10mm bar) design with keylock and the very secure Triact closure. Quicker to do up and undo than a traditional maillon, light, and perhaps marginally safer in that should the gate undo itself in the course of a very long pitch, or lots of prussiking, the Omni will maintain the integrity of the loop. Weight 92g
Troll Sprint wiregate
£6.50

Troll Sprint wiregate

Troll Sprint 9 wiregate. For the price, a seriously light, strong and compact karabiner. Suitable for deviations, clipping tackle bags to things / people, and general accessory use where a screwgate is unnecessary. You can also use it for climbing, which is what is was designed for! The lock is the old fashioned 'fishing hook' - marginally less easy to unclip than a keylock; but very light, and good at shedding mud in particularly foul places. Size on long axis 95mm, weight 49g, gate opening 22mm. Long axis strength is 27kn, gate loaded 8kn, gate open 8kn.
Petzl Djinn karabiner
£6.00

Petzl Djinn karabiner

A wide-opening snaplink with a smooth opening action and keylock gate. As a cowstail karabiner it has most of what you need! The Djinn is a quality, cost effective piece of kit that is available in both straight, and bent gate versions. Greater care is needed if a caver chooses the second option, because the more easy clipping action, also makes it marginally easier for the rope to unclipping itself under some circumstances... Weight 45g. Strength on main axis 23kn: gate open, 9kn; and cross-loaded, 8kn. Made in France.
Edelrid Pure snaplink
£6.30

Edelrid Pure snaplink

The Pure's keylock closure, and light weight, makes this karabiner particularly suited for use in cowstails. The cowstail krabs are one of the most important parts of the whole SRT system; so a careful choice in this matter is entirely appropriate...cheap snaplinks in this capacity are a poor investment. This karabiner has a steel-sprung gate, which copes well with the caving environment. The gate opening is 18mm, and the crucial measurements are: Weight is 50g. Long opening strength 27KN: , gate open strength 8KN; cross llaced strength is 7kn. Made in Germany.
Petzl Ange Large
£9.60

Petzl Ange Large

A specialised bit of kit for krab connoisseurs who value high performance in their personal SRT kit... A light, strong wiregate with a wide gate opening and smooth nose for easy clipping and unclipping. The H section retains strength and maximises internal surface area for durability, while cutting weight to 34g. With a very smooth action and wire gate which facilitates clipping, this makes for the top end of what is available for cowstails, unless you favour screwgates. Long axis strength 22KN; gate open strength 10KN (which is pretty high); cross loaded 7KN. Gate aperture is 26mm. Coloured blue. Made in France, three year warranty.
Climbing Technology Lime Screwgate
£8.40

Climbing Technology Lime Screwgate

A light, strong and compact screwgate karabiner, with a reliable and durable steel spring operating the gate. As it is a keylock design it will make clipping bolts and ropes relatively easy, although the smaller gate opening aperture makes it better for attaching ascenders to safety cords, or as a useful auxiliary krab, than attaching a descender or on a cowstails. Also suitable for rigging, for which we sell in batches (see the Rigging section) 99mm long, weighs 54g, gate opening is 16mm. Strength 24 kn (long axis), 8kn gate loaded, 8kn gate open.
