Fenix HL55 (900 lumens)
Fenix HL55 LED headtorch, takes one Lithium 18650 battery, or two Lithium CR123 batteries. Up to 900 lumens output in 'burst' mode. Of our range of Fenix products this is the one we see as a primary caving light, or as a full backup for multi-day expeditionary caving.
With four settings, and a brighter 'burst' setting, this seems to be a nice balance between size and performance at a good price for those who value lightness and brightness above long duration or multiple beam settings - ideal for digging and prospecting.
The brightness / duration levels are: 420 lumens for 3.75 hours; 165 lumens for 10 hours; 55 lumens for 30 hours; and 10 lumens for 150 hours. Burst light gives around 900 lumens.
Using press button operation, the 'burst' setting is a long-press feature i.e. it turns off when you let go of the switch. The torch fits neatly on the elasticated headband (will fit around a neck, and on a helmet at a stretch). It has a regulated output and polarity protection.
Weight is 115g without the battery, the HL55 is c.8.5cm long and c.4.6cm wide; so it really should not be very noticeable to wear as a backup; and very light indeed on the helmet. It is also waterproof to 2m depth, is made of alloy for abrasion resistance, and uses a Cree XM - L2 T6 LED for those to whom this detail means something; in this case, it emits a less blue, more neutral light.
NB THIS LIGHT DOES NOT COME WITH EITHER BATTERY OR CHARGER
