Canyoning In The Alps - Northern Italy & Ticino

Canyoning In The Alps - Northern Italy & Ticino by Simon Flower Si Flower has spent much time compiling this guide to ninety classic routes in canyons from the Dolomites to Austria to Slovenia. There are seven grades (using the skiing convention of colours, up to black) so there should be something for every one. The colour images are pretty inspiring too. The detail is very good and this guide holds enough information to make a visit easy to organise, with information on access and local accommodation. There is also advice on hazards, preparation and technique from someone who is clearly well versed in all of these things. A brilliant accompaniment to wet and wild adventures in the mountains of Southern Europe. Paperback, 448 pages, colour illustrations.
Petzl Pirana
£24.60

Petzl Pirana

A descender made of hot forged aluminium, designed specifically for canyoning. It offers multiple braking options and, most importantly, the pitch rope can be installed without removing the Pirana from the user's harness. When used with a larger karabiner it is designed to create a single unit which facilitates in-water disconnects; also it reduces the chance of the gate-loading of the krab during dynamic movements. Designed to work with single ropes of 8-11mm, and can work with doubled ropes in certain configurations. Given weight 90g.
Aventure Verticale Mazerin sit harness
£56.70

Aventure Verticale Mazerin sit harness

Aventure Verticale sit harness for SRT; caving, and canyoning. A very versatile and supportive new addition to the AV range, the Mazerin is fully adjustable and features a 'bum strap' arrangement, but with two separate and releasable leg straps to allow precise adjustment (also slackening off for comfort, on approach walks). All in 44mm tape webbing, with two solid 'climbing harness' style gear loops, plus two smaller tape gear loops on the left hand side of the waist belt. It also features an integrated (but removeable and replaceable) PVC seat protection. There is also a strong integrated loop at the mid point of the bum strap to carry tackle bags - this keeps them nicely out of the way while ascending the rope. Quite a low profile harness, it is very useful for those who cave in wetsuits due to the PVC seat protection and easy adjustability. The size 3 will also fit over a drysuit. Available in S (55 - 75cm waist), M - L (55 - 105cm waist), or XL (55 - 125 cm waist). The latter...
AV Comfort Belt
£12.50

The omfort belt is available in three sizes: Size 1 (XS - M) 45cm Size 2 (M - L) 65cm Size 3 (XL) 80cm Note that it is meant to fit around the back and the hips, not particularly the front of the body. AV Spank Protect

Etche canyoning boots
£51.00

Etche canyoning boots

Etche canyoning boots. Also entirely suitable for caving, these are a rugged set of footwear built to the same specification as the boots, but with four lace holes, and a slit and reinforced achilles, with an overall height of just under eight inches. As with the boots, they have a very grippy tread, and no midsole. There is no footplate or steel toecap, but protection is good especially across the toe box. Trainer insoles are a great aid to comfort in these, as in all caving boots (how many shoes do you have, now, without insoles?). The lace up ankle makes for greater support, and prevents grit entering easily (especially compared to cut-down wellies). They drain immediately and feel a lot lighter than full-size boots - an advantage in long aqueous trips, and also where there is a lot of SRT to do. (See the relevant section in 'Alpine Caving Techniques' for a fuller discussion of footwear for expedition use) As canyoning boots, these have received good feedback, and their relatively...
