Caving Gear Image

Canyoning Kit

Harnesses, bags, ropes; plus clothing and boots for aqueous and vertical excursions. Also useful for very wet caving trips.

Kong Slyde
£8.10

Kong Slyde

The base for an adjustable lanyard, compact, lighweight and strong (2500kg). A multi-purpose piece of kit, smaller than the KISA and somewhat quicker to adjust 'in the field'. Blue anodised aluminium. Given weight 44g.
Petzl Pirana
£26.40

Petzl Pirana

A descender made of hot forged aluminium, designed specifically for canyoning. It offers multiple braking options and, most importantly, the pitch rope can be installed without removing the Pirana from the user's harness. When used with a larger karabiner it is designed to create a single unit which facilitates in-water disconnects; also it reduces the chance of the gate-loading of the krab during dynamic movements. Designed to work with single ropes of 8-11mm, and can work with doubled ropes in certain configurations. Given weight 90g.
Kong Oka
£27.90

Kong Oka

The Oka is designed particularly for canyoning, allowing multiple arrangements to cope with different rope diameters. The karabiner attachment hole is made to hold the relevant karabiner firmly, reducing the risk of loss in the very-dynamic canyon environment. Recommended for ropes of diameters between 7.8mm and 12.7mm. Made of anodised blue aluminium. Given weight 95g. Conforms with CE EN 15151-2
Petzl Am'D Twistlock
£16.20

Petzl Am'D Twistlock

Medium sized alloy D shaped twistlock karabiner, reassuringly solid and strong. Keylock gate. A practical accessory krab for rescue purposes, and especially for cowstails if a very secure connection is favoured, which can still be used one-handed (with practice!) NB we do not recommend this particular closure for attaching descenders, simply because other karabiners in this range perform better in this role. Major axis strength 27Kn; open gate strength 8Kn; gate opening 25mm; weight 75g.
Petzl Freino
£32.40

Petzl Freino

A neat karabiner, especially made for situations where extra firction needs to be added to an abseiling or lowering device. The Freino has a braking spur built in, which can accept ropes up to 12mm. The rope is fitted into the braking spur without any need to open the main body of the karabiner. The prime advantage of the Freino is that it is very neat and compact when used in an SRT set up, which can simplfy things for beginners (and the experienced!)as there are fewer items on the maillon. Also it avoids the issue of a weighted rope below the abseiler cuasing problems - see most recent SRT training manuals. The Freino is made of aluminium and uses a twist-lock closure. Weight 85g.Major axis strength 25KN; minor axis 10KN; and gate open strength 9KN. Gate opening is 15mm, sufficient for placing on any central-maillon type connector.
AV Spank Protect
£14.40

AV Spank Protect

PVC seat protector which fits on most harnesses. Sewn and rivetted, this simple suit-saver fits on the MTDE Club, but also similar harnesses using 44mm tape (or less) such as the AV Muruk and the Petzl Super Avanti. Available in two sizes. Weight 170g
Aventure Verticale Mazerin
£56.70

Aventure Verticale Mazerin

Aventure Verticale sit harness for SRT; caving, and canyoning. A very versatile and supportive addition to the AV range, the Mazerin is fully adjustable and features a 'bum strap' arrangement, but with two separate and releasable leg straps to allow precise adjustment (also slackening off for comfort, on approach walks). All in 44mm tape webbing, with two solid 'climbing harness' style gear loops, plus two smaller tape gear loops on the left hand side of the waist belt. It also features an integrated (but removeable and replaceable) PVC seat protection. There is also a strong integrated loop at the mid point of the bum strap to carry tackle bags - this keeps them nicely out of the way while ascending the rope. Quite a low profile harness, it is very useful for those who cave in wetsuits due to the PVC seat protection and easy adjustability. The size 3 will also fit over a diving drysuit. Available in S (55 - 75cm waist), M - L (55 - 105cm waist), or XL (55 - 125 cm waist). The latter...
AV Comfort Belt
£12.50

AV Comfort Belt

A foam padded PVC belt reinforcement for increased comfort. The Comfort belt is attached by four press studded webbing straps, through which the harness belt fits. It is made for the Mascun harness but is worth trying with any sub 44mm tape. The omfort belt is available in three sizes: Size 1 (XS - M) 45cm Size 2 (M - L) 65cm Size 3 (XL) 80cm Note that it is meant to fit around the back and the hips, not particularly the front of the body. Weight 120g
Etche canyoning boots
£51.00
:

Etche canyoning boots

Etche canyoning boots. Also entirely suitable for caving, these are a rugged set of footwear built to the same specification as the boots, but with four lace holes, and a slit and reinforced achilles, with an overall height of just under eight inches. As with the boots, they have a very grippy tread, and no midsole. There is no footplate or steel toecap, but protection is good especially across the toe box. Trainer insoles are a great aid to comfort in these, as in all caving boots (how many shoes do you have, now, without insoles?). The lace up ankle makes for greater support, and prevents grit entering easily (especially compared to cut-down wellies). They drain immediately and feel a lot lighter than full-size boots - an advantage in long aqueous trips, and also where there is a lot of SRT to do. (See the relevant section in 'Alpine Caving Techniques' for a fuller discussion of footwear for expedition use) As canyoning boots, these have received good feedback, and their relatively...
