Ascenders

Petzl Tibloc
£22.00

Petzl Tibloc

Tibloc emergency jammer. No moving parts, a simple item for rescues or very minimal SRT kits, and weighing only 39g it would not be noticed in the context of most vertical caving.Made of chrome plated steel with angled teeth to grip ropes of 8mm - 11mm, it has a 'self-cleaning' slot which allows it to work on icy or muddy ropes. The Tibloc also requires a medium sized (10 - 12mm) oval karabiner, such as the Axxis. Starless River supplies the Tibloc with a strong nylon loop to prevent it being dropped in moments of stress! NB this is an effective jammer, but not nearly as quick or efficient for prussiking as more standard sprung cam items. If you are intending to use two of these as a very light setup, we **strongly** recommend that you practice first, somewhere not too committing!
Kong Duck
£33.00

Kong Duck

Probably the cutest piece of technical metalware, in the world... The Duck is a sprung cam jammer which will work on ropes of diameter 8mm - 13mm. It will also (we think uniquely) grip on tubular or doubled tape slings. At only 70g, and measuring under 6.5cm on its longest axis, it has a place in the gear of all vertical cavers or mountaineers. Very versatile, it can be considered for: 1. a spare jammer in case of loss or rescue; 2. a hand jammer in an ultra lightweight SRT kit, or; 3. as a very compact hauling assist (the design allows a hauling rope to run over the large fixed bollard through which the attachment krab is clipped, making a simple non-pulley jammer)
Petzl Shunt Ascender
£42.60

Petzl Shunt Ascender

Petzl Shunt ascender. Actually, as a lever cam device it can act as both a jammer and a safeguarder of abseiling. Basically it is useful if you are likely to encounter: 1. Very muddy ropes, because the grip is due to weight being placed on the Shunt, which the device transmits to the rope - unlike most sprung cam jammers, which rely primarily on the teeth on the cam gripping the rope. 2. Icy ropes, for the reasons as above. In each case the Shunt is best used as a hand jammer. 3. A fixed rope which safeguards a ladder. One device can function to safeguard ascent and descent. Probably not for everyday use, but a very handy resource to have available if you're digging or planning on meeting icy entrance pitches this winter!
Petzl Croll
£42.00

Petzl Croll

Petzl Croll. Lighter and more compact(by about 1/3) than the older versions. New cam (longer and narrower) for tenacious grip on ropes from 8mm - 11mm. Stainless steel plate reduces friction an improves wear; especially useful for those Pantin users whose technique wears the front plate of the jammer more quickly. Weight 85g, alloy frame, stainless steel cam and wear plate.
Climbing Technology Evo chest ascender
£42.00

Climbing Technology Evo chest ascender

Evo chest ascender, by Climbing Technology of Italy. A durable chest ascender for those who prefer a larger model than the latest generation Petzl Croll, either because of large hands, a tendency to fumble fingers, or just because it makes you feel happy... This version has a cam arrangement specifically designed to make down-prussiking easier. Works on ropes of 8mm - 13mm, the CT Evo weighs only 145g. NB maximum workload is 100kg.
Camp Turbo Chest
£54.00

Camp Turbo Chest

The Turbo Chest ascender is made by Camp and has now been around for a couple of years. A very 'different' looking piece of kit, it replaces the traditional front plate with a pair of stainless steel rollers. The idea is that they reduce friction, for quicker ascents and less wear on the rope. The main body is 3.5mm alloy, apart from the cam. This is also stainless, with the self-cleaning holes found on all modern jammers. The Camp Turbo Chest makes some big claims! But it does seem to be popular with those who use it. I will be trying one out on a quick expedition (very soon) and will give more feedback after that. Weight is 110g, and the working load is 120kg. It comes in red.
Petzl Basic
£42.00

Petzl Basic

Petzl Basic 2013 version. Lighter and more compact(by about 1/3) than the versions we have used for the last few decades; a significant innovation from Petzl of a core product. New cam (longer and narrower) for tenacious grip on ropes from 8mm - 11mm. Stainless steel cam for corrosion resistance with alloy body. This Basic ascender is quite different from the preceding version in the way it sits in the hand. The larger clip in hole is useful for cavers using the continental method of keeping footloop / hand-jammer as a distinct and separate unit, into which the the safety cord is clipped. For those using the modern dyneema footloop, this is an advance; for those using the traditional integrated safety / footloop, it makes no difference. It is useful to note that the 2013 basic does not work so efficiently as a pulley-jammer with the Fixe pulley, as the earlier version. The Petzl Partner is the preferred option. Weight 90g, alloy frame, stainless steel cam.
Climbing Technology Simple hand ascender
£42.00

Climbing Technology Simple hand ascender

Simple hand ascender made by Climbing Technology of Italy. A solid ascender that has two holes in the top of the jammer, which allows the construction of the old-style pulley jammer arrangement. A piece of kit for the large handed, or who want something a bit more substantial to haul up on, when prussiking! The latest version has a redesigned lever mechanism on the cam, to make down prussiking / general cam release under load, easier Works on ropes of 8mm - 13mm diameter, and the Simple weighs 150g.
Kong Futura hand LEFT
£45.00

Kong Futura hand LEFT

Kong Futura Hand jammer. A very lightweight and compact handled jammer from this innovative Italian company. The Futura works on ropes from 8mm - 12mm, and runs very smoothly. The rope contact surface is very large, running the full length of the 'handle' (14cm) This model is designed for left handed use. The hand positioning is unusual, in that it simulates holding the rope, but *underneath* the point of connection, rather than above it; it is quite dissimilar to both standard handled, and non-handled jammers. Once accustomed to it, the Futura is very efficient and user friendly. It has been noted by users that it is more forgiving of being pushed up against knots than most ascenders - but it it still best to avoid this! Length: 140mm. Weight only 125g
Kong Futura Hand RIGHT

Kong Futura Hand RIGHT

Kong Futura Hand jammer. A very lightweight and compact new handled jammer from this innovative Italian company. The Futura works on ropes from 8mm - 12mm, and runs very smoothly. The rope contact surface is very large, running the full length of the 'handle' (14cm) This model is designed for right handed use. The hand positioning is unusual, in that it simulates holding the rope, but *underneath* the point of connection, rather than above it; it is quite dissimilar to both standard handled, and non-handled jammers.
